About Linville, North Carolina
Linville's builders put up a fine hotel, dammed a lake and built a turnpike around Grandfather Mountain to Blowing Rock. The press praised the scenery, and visitors came wanting lots for cottages. But a lawsuit tied up the property, titles could not be made, and the boom faded. Blowing Rock, once a hamlet, grew instead.
Linville was founded in 1883 and laid out by Samuel T. Kelsey of Kansas. Its name honors William and John Linville, two men killed in a Cherokee attack in 1766. Tweetsie trains ran through town from 1916 to 1940. That year a major flood swept away the tracks.
- The Highland Games held in townLinville is a summer mountain resort. It hosts the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, the largest such games in North Carolina.
