About Livermore Falls, Maine

Livermore Falls is a town of 3,060 people in Androscoggin County, on the Androscoggin River. The Abenaki called this country Rockemeka, the "great corn place." In 1771 the General Court of Massachusetts granted the land as Port Royal to heirs of men who had fought in the 1710 campaign against the Acadian capital of that name. Settlers came in 1786, and in 1795 the town was incorporated as Livermore, honoring Deacon Elijah Livermore, one of its first English settlers.

The Androscoggin also served as the county line, so the town was split, with Oxford County on the west bank and Kennebec County on the east. To fix that, the eastern quarter of the old Port Royal grant broke away and was incorporated as East Livermore on March 1, 1844. It joined the new Androscoggin County on March 31, 1854, and on March 15, 1929, East Livermore took the name Livermore Falls.

  • Apples, cattle and millsEarly in the nineteenth century this was farm country, and its apple orchards and dairies shipped to markets in Boston and Portland. The town was known for fine cattle. Later in the century, falls on the Androscoggin that drop 14 feet turned the wheels of gristmills and sawmills, and logging and lumber grew into major trades.
  • A mill town from 1852The Androscoggin Railroad reached Livermore Falls in 1852, and factories soon gathered along the river. Shoes were made here, and paper too, at mills such as Hugh J. Chisholm's Umbagog Pulp Company.
  • New England's longest single spanThe Third Bridge, built across the Androscoggin in 1897, stretched 800 feet. At the time no single-span bridge in New England was longer.
  • A poet laureate's hometownThe poet Louise Bogan was a native of Livermore Falls, born here in 1897. Her first book of poems, Body of This Death, came out in 1923, and she reviewed poems for The New Yorker between 1931 and 1970. In 1945 the Library of Congress made her its Consultant in Poetry, the first woman to hold the post now called U.S. Poet Laureate, and in 1955 she won the Bollingen Prize.
