About Lodi, Ohio

Lodi is a village of 2,746 people in Medina County, on the East Fork of the Black River southwest of Medina. Settlers arrived in 1811, which makes it the oldest settlement in the county. The place was first called Harrisville, in honor of Judge Joseph Harris, and its present name comes from an Italian city, the Lodi where Napoleon's army won a battle in 1796.

The first settlers built close to what is now the village center, and that spot stayed the heart of the township from then on. The earliest stores opened there, and Orrin Chapman put up a tavern at the center in the very early years. Lodi was incorporated as a village in 1891.

  • A road through the treesA pioneer named Redfield cut the first route from here to Medina through the forest, and Redfield Street carries his name. His road wound so much that the first government road through the area was laid out straighter, and in later years that road became U.S. Route 42.
  • A railroad town by 1888By 1888 the county history placed Lodi eleven miles southwest of Medina on the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. The village had its own newspaper, the Review, run by H. E. Bassett, along with a Methodist Episcopal church, a Congregational church and the Exchange bank, led by John Taylor with A. B. Taylor as cashier. That year's school census counted 134 children. The village's Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad Depot joined the National Register in 2013.
  • Water that goes both waysLodi sits on the north and south continental divide. The East Fork of the Black River comes into the village from the north and bends back north on its way to Lake Erie, while rain falling here can drain either north to the lake or south toward the Ohio River.
  • Sweet corn in JulyFor years Lodi held a Sweet Corn Festival in the middle of July. It lasted three days, opened with a big parade through the town square, and offered fair food and amusement rides. The last one, in 2019, ran for a single day. That same year the village started the Parkstock Music Festival, where bands play to raise money for the local parks.
