About Logan, Montana

Logan is an unincorporated community of 72 people in Gallatin County, on the Gallatin River. Montana Place Names says it started in 1866 as a few buildings gathered around a stage stop known as Canyon House. In 1889 the Northern Pacific and Montana railroad put a station here, and while the line was being built, crews still called the place Canyon House after the house that stood there.

The station took the name Logan on November 26, 1889. Montana Place Names says the name honors Edelia Logan, an early resident whose husband, John, died at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Wikipedia tells it differently: Captain William Logan came to Montana in 1872 and died on August 9, 1877, fighting in the Battle of the Big Hole, and the railroad later bought its right-of-way here from his widow, Odelia.

  • Town site platted in 1893William D. Flowers and Mary E. Flowers owned the Logan town site. Their certificate is dated October 20, 1892, and they filed the town plat on June 10, 1893.
  • A junction on the Northern PacificLogan was a key junction on the Northern Pacific's Rocky Mountain Division. Here, trains heading west could turn north toward Helena and Mullan Pass, or south toward Butte over Homestake Pass. From the 1920s through the 1950s the railroad also ran a freight-only line from Logan to Bozeman. Diesel engines such as the EMD FT made that second route unnecessary, and its track was later taken up.
  • The roundhouse fire of 1932Into the 1930s, Logan kept a six-stall roundhouse with coal and water for the railroad's steam locomotives. Fire destroyed the roundhouse in December 1932 and destroyed or damaged at least three steam locomotives. The Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman keeps photographs of the fire as part of its Ronald V. Nixon Collection.
  • A buffalo jump 7 miles southMadison Buffalo Jump State Park lies 7 miles south of Logan. It ranks among the largest archaeological sites of its kind in Montana.
