About Loop, Texas
Loop is a community of 216 people in northeastern Gaines County, on State Highway 83 between Seagraves, 9 miles to the west, and Welch, 17 miles to the east. Seminole, the county seat, lies 26 miles to the southwest by road.
Ranchers worked this land in the 1890s, before anyone settled here for good. Joe Sherman became the first settler in 1905, and the small community that followed went by Blue Goose before it became Loop.
- Ranchers before settlersThe Quinn family ranched here in the 1890s and were some of the earliest ranchers in the area. Joe Sherman arrived in 1905 as the first settler, and the community that grew up here was first known as Blue Goose.
- Renamed Loop in 1912In 1912 the post office department gave its approval to Loop as the community's new name, replacing Blue Goose. The name is said to come from the loop of the postmaster's lasso.
- Home of the Loop LonghornsThe Loop Independent School District teaches every grade from kindergarten through 12th on one campus, where the primary school meets in a circular building. The Longhorns play six-man football, volleyball, basketball and tennis, run track and field, and keep a marching band and a concert band.
