About Lowell, Iowa

A man named McCarver laid out Lowell in the southeast corner of Henry County. The first child born in the village was T. S. Box. He was also the first child born anywhere in Henry County. William Marsh became the first doctor, and Edward Archibald the first justice of the peace.

M. M. McCarver laid out the village of Lowell, and Harmon Mathews built its first house. Hiram Smith built the first mill, but high water later washed it away. Coal lay under the township, but timber was so plentiful that wood was the cheapest fuel.
