About Lower Brule, South Dakota

Lower Brule is a community of 703 people in Lyman County, on the western shore of Lake Sharpe, a Missouri River reservoir. It sits inside the Lower Brule Indian Reservation and takes its name from it, and in Lakota the town is called Khulwíčhaša.

Long ago, the tribe says, the Sicangu people divided into two groups: the Kul Wicasa Oyate, or lower people, and the Heyata Wicasa Oyate, or uplands people. The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe goes by the first of those names, and Lower Brule is its home community.

  • Home of the Lower Brule AgencyThe Bureau of Indian Affairs runs its Lower Brule Agency from the town. The agency serves the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and the whole reservation.
  • Walleye on Lake SharpeA boat landing just north of town puts anglers on Lake Sharpe, where walleye and other fish are caught. The tribe lets people who aren't members hunt and fish on the reservation, and upland game birds are plentiful in the fall.
  • Popcorn and the Golden BuffaloThe Lower Brule Sioux Tribe runs a business that packages popcorn. It also operates the town's casino, the Golden Buffalo.
