About Lowville, Wisconsin
The town of Lowville was created when the county was organized in 1846. It was named after Jacob Low, its most prominent citizen. That year a post office opened with Low as postmaster. He also turned his house into a hotel and ran the tavern until 1853.
In 1852 a post office named Rio opened in the northeast corner of Lowville. Nobody ever knew why it got that name. In 1864 N. B. Dunlap laid out a village just over the line and adopted the well-known name. The post office moved to his village within a few months.
