About Lyons, Kansas

Lyons is a city of 3,611 people and the county seat of Rice County. It began in 1870 as a town called Atlanta, and that December the Atlanta Town Company put up the county's first hotel, the Atlanta Hotel. The company handed the building to the county, which used it as its courthouse and offices until May 1876.

That year the new town of Lyons absorbed Atlanta, took over as county seat and carried the name of Freeman J. Lyons. Lyons was incorporated on February 26, 1880, and voters chose W. T. Nichols as mayor that April. In June 1880 the Marion and McPherson branch of the Santa Fe railroad reached town, and the county history soon put the population at 900, with two banks, a flour mill, two hotels and three livery stables.

  • A cross for Juan de PadillaCoronado and his men are thought to have camped near the site of Lyons while searching for Quivira, a place said to be rich in gold. Juan de Padilla, one of the expedition, came back the next year as a missionary and started a church in the area. He was killed in 1542, and many regard him as North America's first Christian martyr. A cross west of Lyons honors him.
  • County firsts in 1870In the fall of 1870 Newell Wood built the first frame house in Rice County here, and the county's first frame schoolhouse went up here as well. In January 1871 Earl Joslin became the first postmaster in the county, at a post office first called Brookdale.
  • Salt mining since 1890The Western Salt Company sank its first shaft to mine salt at Lyons in 1890. Salt is still a local industry, with Lyons Salt Company and Compass Minerals on the southeastern side of the city.
  • The Lyons Lions, 1909 to 1913Lyons fielded a minor league baseball team called the Lions. From 1909 to 1911 the team played in the Class D Kansas State League. In 1912 it moved to the Central Kansas League, then returned to the Kansas State League for 1913. After that season the franchise folded for good.
