Vintage Photo of General MacArthur and President Osmeña at Tacloban, 1944 | Restored WWII Print
Beautifully designed. Printed on archival paper for modern walls.
This vintage photo of General Douglas MacArthur and President Sergio Osmeña at Tacloban comes from the U.S. Navy's own files at the National Archives. MacArthur, in aviator sunglasses and his gold-braided cap, sits beside the President of the Philippines, in a pith helmet and round dark glasses, as they ride by jeep to the liberation ceremony on Leyte in October 1944.
About This Historic Photo
The Navy's caption reads: "Landed ashore from PT's, Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur and Pres. of the Philippines Sergio Osmena, ride by jeep to the ceremonies in Tacloban, Capital of Leyte where the proclamation of Liberation is to be read." Three days after his "I have returned" landing, MacArthur stood in front of the Leyte Provincial Capitol and told the Filipino people, "I restore to you a constitutional administration by countrymen of your confidence and choice." Tacloban served as the capital of the Philippine Commonwealth until February 1945. The same day, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle of World War II, began offshore.
KNOWOL restored this print from the National Archives' scan of the original U.S. Navy negative (80-G-258303), taken by the Navy's Combat Photographic Unit 3. It's printed edge to edge on ultra premium luster photo paper, a popular choice for fine photographic prints. Luster has a finish between gloss and matte and takes a heavy layer of ink, so the tones come out rich and deep.
