About Macclenny, Florida

Macclenny is a city of 7,304 people, about 28 miles west of downtown Jacksonville, and it serves as the county seat for Baker County. A few settlers lived here as early as 1829, but newcomers arrived in real numbers only after the Civil War. The place was first known as Darbyville, because the Darby family held most of the surrounding land.

Carr Bowers McClenny married into that family, and in the late 1800s he bought most of its land for the timber. The town was renamed for him, and he built his business on the forest, with logging, sawmills, turpentine and land sales.

  • Why it's spelled MacclennyThe post office department wouldn't allow a capital letter in the middle of a town name. To satisfy that rule, McClenny became Macclenny, and the town's first post office opened under that spelling in 1890.
  • Yellow fever in 1888In 1888 an epidemic of yellow fever killed most of the people living in town. Macclenny came back slowly, and by 1890 it counted 334 residents.
  • A courthouse from 1908Edward Columbus Hosford of Eastman, Georgia, who drew courthouses for counties across Florida and Georgia, designed the Old Baker County Courthouse on McIver Avenue West in an eclectic Colonial Revival style. It stood for the county's pride as local farms shifted from feeding families to growing crops for sale. The building joined the National Register in 1986 and now houses the Emily Taber Public Library.
