About Macwahoc, Maine
John Rollins made the first clearing at the Reed place, just inside Macwahoc, about 1848. He built a two-story house and a large stable and opened a hotel. Hugh Reed later kept it for many years. In the 1850s, stage riders from Bangor to Houlton reached it at daylight to a glowing fire and a warm breakfast.
The federal government built the Military Road in 1832, through Macwahoc and Haynesville to the garrison at Houlton. Within a week of a draft, 10,000 state militia passed through Bangor and marched north along it toward the frontier.
