This restored linen postcard captures Madison House, billed as the "gateway to the south," a roadside stop in North East, Maryland, along the storied U.S. Route 40. North East sits in Cecil County at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, and for generations Route 40 served as one of the East Coast's great travel arteries, carrying motorists between the cities of the Northeast and points south , making roadside restaurants like this one a welcome sight for weary drivers.
From roughly the 1930s into the 1940s, American postcards entered their celebrated "linen" era, printed on textured card stock with bright, saturated colors that gave everyday scenes a cheerful glow. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back its original warmth and detail.
