About Malvern, Iowa

Malvern grew from the completion of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. J. D. Paddock built its first house in 1869, then he and his brother opened the town's first stock of goods.

Malvern began in the fall of 1869 as the pioneer village of Milton. It took a new name when settlers learned Iowa already had a Milton. The first people to live in Malvern were John D. Paddock and his new wife. Their small home also served as the first store.

  • A lost neighbor town moved hereWhite Cloud, a town of perhaps 200 people, stood by the Nishnabotna River southeast of Malvern. When the railroad was built two miles north, White Cloud soon closed. Several of its businesses and residents moved to Malvern.
