About the City of Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Manitowoc is a city of 34,626 people and the seat of Manitowoc County, where the Manitowoc River flows into Lake Michigan. Its name comes from Ojibwe and Menominee words tied to spirits, and in Menominee it is Manetōwak, the place of the spirits. French fur traders reached the area in 1673, and the Northwest Fur Company opened a trading post here in 1795.

President Andrew Jackson opened the region to land sales in 1835, even before the Menominee gave up the land in the Treaty of the Cedars the next year. William Jones and Louis Fizette made the first recorded purchases on August 3, 1835. Benjamin Jones, William's brother, took the Wisconsin land as his share and is counted as the founder. The settlement became a village on March 6, 1851, and a city on March 12, 1870.

  • School in a warehouseManitowoc's first school met in the Jones warehouse, where S. M. Peake taught the twelve children then living in the settlement. St. James' Episcopal Church, the earliest congregation anywhere in the county, began meeting in 1841.
  • County seat since 1853The legislature split Manitowoc County off from Brown County in 1838 and kept the native name. In 1853 the village of Manitowoc took the county seat from its neighbor, Manitowoc Rapids. The present Manitowoc County Courthouse went up in 1906, and it joined the National Register in 1981.
  • From the Citizen to submarinesJoseph Edwards built the area's first schooner, the Citizen, in 1847. Shipyards here went on to turn out schooners and clippers for fishing and trade on the Great Lakes, and during World War II the city built landing craft, tankers and 28 submarines for the U.S. Navy. In December 2022 the National Park Service named Manitowoc Wisconsin's World War II Heritage City.
  • Sputnik on North 8th StreetSputnik 4, a Soviet test flight launched on May 15, 1960, was pointed the wrong way by a guidance error and climbed into a higher orbit instead of coming down. When it finally fell on September 5, 1962, a 20-pound piece landed on North 8th Street. The Soviets claimed the piece, but a cast of it went on display at the Rahr West Art Museum, and in 2008 the city held its first Sputnikfest.
