About Maple Grove, Minnesota
Maple Grove is a Hennepin County city whose population reached 70,253 in the 2020 census. Settlement began in 1851, and the township was organized in 1858; its name reflects the hard and sugar maples once abundant in local forests. Today, the city includes 13 named lakes, major transportation corridors, Elm Creek Park Reserve, and the Arbor Lakes retail area.
- Early SettlementLouis Gervais settled in the area in 1851, and Maple Grove Township was organized in 1858.
- Thirteen Named LakesThe city's 13 named lakes include Arbor Lake, Eagle Lake, Fish Lake, Rice Lake, Teal Lake, and Weaver Lake.
- Pierre Bottineau HouseBuilt in 1854 as the township's first wood-frame house, the Pierre Bottineau House was later moved to Elm Creek Park Reserve.
- City Since 1974Maple Grove became a city in 1974, and its current Government Center opened in October 2000.
- Regional CrossroadsInterstate 94 meets Interstates 494 and 694 at the Fish Lake split, while U.S. Route 169 follows the city's eastern border.
