About Marcy, New York

Marcy is a town of 8,777 people in Oneida County, between the cities of Rome and Utica, with the Mohawk River as its southern line. Settlers first came here around 1773. During the American Revolution, a friendly Oneida man warned them that enemy raiders were on the way, so the families left their farms and stayed away until the war ended.

People returned and settled the land again in 1792. The area was still part of the Town of Deerfield, its neighbor to the east, until 1832. That year a piece of Deerfield became a separate town, and it was named for Governor William L. Marcy.

  • Lock 20 on the Erie CanalThe Erie Canal, which today's maps also label the Barge Canal, crosses the south end of Marcy and runs beside River Road. Lock 20 Canal Park sits on the canal just east of the Route 291 bridge.
  • SUNY Polytechnic InstituteSUNY Polytechnic Institute, a public research university with four-year programs, covers 700 acres in the southeastern part of town. Its campus lies northwest of the point where the North-South Arterial, carrying NY 8 and NY 12, meets NY 49.
  • Hub of the state gridThe New York Power Authority's Frederick R. Clark Energy Center stands in Marcy. Its Marcy Substation is one of the major substations serving the power transmission grid for all of New York.
