About Marin City, California

Marin City is a community of 2,993 people in southern Marin County, just northwest of Sausalito and about 5 miles north of San Francisco. Before World War II the land held a dairy farm and a few families. After the United States entered the war in December 1941, builders put up housing here through 1942 for 6,000 of the 20,000 workers who came from across the country to work at Marinship, the shipyard on the Sausalito waterfront. Marinship launched 93 Liberty ships and tankers in under three years.

Many of the Black shipyard workers had come from the South in the Great Migration, and when the war ended they stayed, some by choice and some because zoning kept Black families out of the nearby towns. African Americans had made up about 10 percent of Marin City during the war. By the 1970s they were more than 75 percent, and most of them were descendants of Marinship workers.

“During an era when segregation was widely practiced in California as well as across the South, Marin City was a surprisingly diverse, racially integrated community.”
BlackPast.org, 2011
  • Golden Gate Village, 1955 to 1960When Marinship closed, many low-income workers lost their jobs, and the public housing now called Golden Gate Village was planned and built for them between 1955 and 1960. Architects John Carl Warnecke and Aaron Green, who had trained under Frank Lloyd Wright, designed it with landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. In 1964 the community received the first HUD award for Design Excellence, and the complex is listed on the National Register.
  • Its own district since 1958Marin City has never incorporated as a city. Since 1958 the Marin City Community Services District, led by an elected board of five, has run its parks and recreation, street lights, recycling and trash pickup. In the early 21st century, residents and officials began to talk about becoming a city of their own.
  • The flea market and GatewayMarin City was once known well beyond its borders for the Marin City Flea Market. Over the protests of the community, the market was shut down in the mid-1990s to make room for the Gateway Shopping Center, built in 1996. Today the center is home to the town's public library, which is part of the Marin County Free Library system.
  • A song for homeKeyboardist and composer George Duke was born in San Rafael and grew up in Marin City. Years later he wrote a song about the town, "Marin City," and put it on his 2000 album Cool.
