About Marion, Iowa
Marion is a city of 41,535 people in Linn County, right beside Cedar Rapids. In the spring of 1839 the Territorial Legislature named a group of commissioners to choose a seat for the new county, and they settled on a spot close to its middle. They sent their report to Robert Lucas, the territorial governor, and he then proclaimed Linn County established.
Marion held the county seat for decades while Cedar Rapids grew into the larger city. People argued for years over moving the seat, and in 1919 the question finally went to the voters. They chose Cedar Rapids by 9,960 votes to 4,823, and Marion grew into a suburb with its historic downtown still at its center.
“Ordered, That the county seat of Linn County be and is hereby called and shall hereafter be known and designated by the name of Marion. The name was chosen in honor of Gen. Marion of Revolutionary fame.”
- The Granger HouseThe Granger House Museum is a middle-class family home from the 1840s, restored and filled with many of its original furnishings. Its brick carriage house went up beside it in 1879. The house joined the National Register in 1976, and the museum now offers guided tours, demonstrations and seasonal events.
- A school for small boysThe Sisters of Mercy opened St. Berchman's Seminary in 1905 as a boarding school for small boys, with five buildings on 23 acres. The actor Don Ameche, later a star of Cocoon, lived there as a boy. The school closed in 1942, and only its main building survives, now turned into apartments.
- A church turned heritage centerMethodists worshiped in the building that is now the Marion Heritage Center from the 1850s until 1875. Today it holds exhibits on the town and its people, and since 2008 it has been the permanent home of Communication by Mail, a fresco mural Dan Rhodes painted in 1939.
- The Swamp Fox FestivalEvery year Marion honors its namesake, the Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, known as the Swamp Fox. The festival brings a community parade, a craft show, a pancake breakfast, a picnic in the park, a 5K run and live music.
