About Marion, Virginia
Marion is a town of 5,751 people in the Blue Ridge country of Southwest Virginia. When Smyth County was created, Marion was chosen as its seat, and the town was named for Francis Marion, an officer in the Revolutionary War.
In December 1864, during the Civil War, the Battle of Marion was fought here. After the war the town became a center for schools and care. Marion College, a two-year Lutheran college for women, opened in 1873 and held classes until 1967, and the state hospital that is now Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute opened in May 1887.
- Where Mountain Dew changedMountain Dew was first sold under that name in Knoxville, Tennessee, but the drink people know today is Marion's version. The Tip Corporation, based in Marion, bought the rights in 1961, and Marion resident William H. "Bill" Jones reworked the flavor. The new formula sold so well that Pepsi bought the Tip Corporation in 1964. Marion went on to hold a Mountain Dew Festival for more than 50 years.
- A state hospital since 1887The hospital that opened here in May 1887 has never closed, and it runs today as Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute. Two buildings from its years as Southwestern State Hospital, the Henderson Building and the Tubercular Building, are on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Nolan Ryan's minor league stopThe Marion Mets played Appalachian League baseball in town from 1965 to 1976. Nolan Ryan, later a Hall of Fame pitcher, was assigned to Marion early in his career.
- A drive-in from 1954The Park Place Drive-In Theatre was built in 1954 and still shows movies. In May 2025, USA Today ranked it 6th among all the drive-ins in the country.
- Sherwood Anderson's townThe author Sherwood Anderson made his home in Marion, and when he died in 1941 he was buried here.
