About Markham, Texas

Markham is a community in Matagorda County, about 90 miles southwest of downtown Houston. It was founded in 1901 under the name Cortes, and in 1903 the Moore-Cortes Canal Company helped the young settlement grow. That same year its residents gave the town a new name, Markham, after a railroad man.

The railroad carried the town through its next decade. By 1914 trains on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad were stopping at Markham, and 500 people lived there. The 2020 census counted 908 residents, and the community's students attend the Tidehaven Independent School District.

  • Named in 1903Residents renamed Cortes for Charles H. Markham, an engineer with the Southern Pacific lines. He later rose to become president of the Illinois Central Railroad.
  • Founded as Cortes in 1901The town began as Cortes in 1901. Two years later the Moore-Cortes Canal Company gave the settlement a boost, the same year the town took the Markham name.
  • A railroad stop by 1914By 1914 trains on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad were pulling in at Markham, and the town had grown to 500 people.
