About the Village of Marquette, Wisconsin

Luther Gleason, a Vermonter, settled at what is now Marquette, on the Fox River, in 1829. He was the first permanent white settler in the county. Gleason traded with Native Americans, kept a store and farmed a tract of land.

In 1836, five men from New York, Philadelphia, Toledo and Green Bay laid out Marquette as a speculation. Their plat looked like the plan of a beautiful city of 3,000 to 6,000 people. Little besides the plat was accomplished at that time. By 1890, about 275 people lived in the village.

  • Once a county seatMarquette County was established in 1836 and fully organized in 1848. Its county seat was placed at Marquette.
