About Marshall, Minnesota
Marshall is a city and the county seat of Lyon County in southwest Minnesota, with 13,628 residents counted in 2020. Platted in 1872 as the railroad arrived, it developed into a regional center with Southwest Minnesota State University and the headquarters of Schwan's Company.
- Railroad Era OriginsMarshall was platted in 1872, incorporated as a village in 1876, and became a city on February 20, 1901.
- Named for a GovernorJames J. Manton selected the name Marshall to honor Minnesota Governor William R. Marshall.
- Redwood River FloodingAfter repeated floods, diversion canals were built from 1961 to 1963, followed by further improvements completed in 2000.
- University MilestonesSouthwest Minnesota State University was founded in 1963, opened in 1967, and built most of its campus by 1973.
- Frozen Food LegacyMarvin Schwan expanded his dairy into an ice cream delivery service that eventually became the Marshall based Schwan Food Company.
