About Martins Ferry, Ohio

Martins Ferry is a city of 6,260 people in Belmont County, on the Ohio River across from Wheeling, West Virginia. Squatters crossed the river and settled here by 1779, almost ten years before Marietta, so it counts as the oldest European settlement in Ohio. They lived in the shadow of Fort Fincastle, built on the Virginia shore in 1774 and later renamed Fort Henry, even though a treaty still barred settlers from the west bank.

The settlement broke up more than once before it took hold as Norristown in 1785. Absalom Martin, an early settler who ran a ferry across the river, platted a town called Jefferson in 1795. He gave up that plan in 1801, when St. Clairsville was chosen as the seat of the new Belmont County. In 1835 his son Ebenezer laid out Martinsville on a grid of streets, and much of that grid survives. The village was incorporated in 1865 and named Martin's Ferry after the old ferry, and it became a city in 1885.

  • A town of many namesBefore it settled on Martin's Ferry in 1865, the place was known as Hoglinstown and Mercertown, then Norristown in 1785, Jefferson in 1795 and Martinsville in 1835. Some time after it became a city in 1885, the apostrophe dropped out of the name.
  • Pioneers in Walnut GroveWalnut Grove Pioneer Cemetery holds Absalom and Ebenezer Martin, who laid out the town, and Ebenezer Zane, the man who blazed Zane's Trace between Wheeling and Maysville, Kentucky. His sister Betty Zane rests there too. In one of the Revolutionary War's final battles she saved Fort Henry by carrying gunpowder hidden in her dress, and the volunteer fire department honors her every year with Betty Zane Frontier Days.
  • Rail hub and river portFrom the late 19th century into the early 20th, Martins Ferry grew into an industrial center, with a busy rail hub and a port on the Ohio River. Over the past 50 years many of those industries closed or moved away, and the city now has less than half the people it once had.
  • Autumn Begins in Martins FerryJames Wright, the Pulitzer Prize winning poet, came from Martins Ferry and named a poem for it, Autumn Begins in Martins Ferry, Ohio. The town held the James Wright Poetry Festival from 1981 to 2007. A historical marker here honors Wright together with the realist author William Dean Howells, known as the Dean of American Letters.
