About Martinsdale, Montana

Martinsdale is a census-designated place of 43 people in southeastern Meagher County, 36 miles east of the county seat at White Sulphur Springs. It grew up near the meeting point of the North and South Forks of the Musselshell River, where early travelers already passed. The Carroll Trail ran about 2 miles north of today's town, and a rougher road linking Fort Ellis, near Bozeman, with Judith Gap crossed the country around the forks.

The settlement was first called Gauglersville. Martin Maginnis, Montana Territory's delegate to Congress, helped the town get a post office, so in 1878 it took his first name and became Martinsdale. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, known as the Milwaukee Road, later made it a stop on its transcontinental main line. That line has since been abandoned, but Martinsdale still serves the ranches and farms around it.

  • Home of Charles M. BairCharles M. Bair lived in Martinsdale and built one of the biggest and most successful sheep operations in the country. The house where the Bair family lived is now a museum.
  • A poet's hometownThe poet Grace Stone Coates made her home in Martinsdale. Her published books include Portulacas in the Wheat, along with Black Cherries and Mead & Mangel-Wurzel.
  • A historic bank, listed 2013The Stockmen's Bank of Martinsdale joined the National Register in 2013. At the time it was only the sixth place in all of Meagher County to be listed.
