About Massac, Kentucky

Massac is a community of 4,635 people in McCracken County, on the southwest side of Paducah. Its western boundary runs along Massac Creek, which flows north into the Ohio River, and part of the old community of Lone Oak lies inside it. The community, its post office and the creek all share a name borrowed from a French fort built in 1757.

  • Opened as Massack in 1851The post office opened on June 30, 1851, under the spelling Massack, with Thomas B. Hines as its first postmaster. It was named for the nearby creek, and the community now spells the name Massac.
  • A French fort on the OhioThe creek took its name from Fort Massac, near what is now Metropolis, Illinois. The French built the fort in 1757 to hold back English settlement along the Ohio River. They first called it Fort Ascension and later renamed it Fort Massiac to honor the French minister of Marine.
