About Maumee, Ohio
Maumee is a city of 13,896 people in Lucas County, on the Maumee River about 10 miles southwest of Toledo. The Ottawa and other Native nations used this part of the river valley long before settlers came. Through most of the eighteenth century, forces from France, Britain and the United States fought over the lower river, since it connected Lake Erie with the lands farther west.
In 1817 a town was platted at the Foot of the Rapids. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and the Wabash and Erie Canal was finished in 1840, and the trade they brought made Maumee a busy river port with shipyards and nearly twenty merchant firms along three miles of docks. Town promoter Jessup Scott predicted it would become the "great city of the West." In the 1850s, though, lake ships grew too big for the river and railroads carried freight faster and cheaper, so those hopes faded.
- Wayne's last fort, 1794Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne built Fort Deposit at Maumee in August 1794, the last fort he raised on his march to Fallen Timbers. On August 20, 1794, his Legion of the United States defeated a confederacy under Little Turtle, the Miami chief, and Blue Jacket, the Shawnee war chief, while the British, their allies, kept out of the battle. The Treaty of Greenville followed in 1795, and the end of the fighting opened the region to American settlement.
- The Wolcotts on River RoadLittle Turtle's daughter, Sweet Breeze, married the scout William Wells, and their daughter Mary married James A. Wolcott. A Connecticut man who arrived in 1818, he made his living here as a merchant and shipbuilder and also served as a judge and politician. The federal style house he put up on River Road in 1827 became, under the couple, a center of frontier life. The Wolcott House still stands at 1031 River Road and is on the National Register.
- County seat from 1840Maumee became the Lucas County seat in 1840. Its Greek Revival courthouse was paid for by private subscription, lawyers traveled from miles around to argue cases there, and court days brought trading too. Maumee was also home to the federal custom house and post office. As settlers pushed farther west, the town lost the county seat.
- Levi Beebe's Commercial BuildingIn 1836 Levi Beebe built the Commercial Building at 301 River Road. It housed stores, a bank and the post office, and during the canal era it served as a stagecoach stop and a gathering place for the town.
