About Maybeury, West Virginia

Maybeury is a community of 109 people in McDowell County, and U.S. Route 52 runs through it on the way from Northfork to Bramwell. The Shamokin Coal & Coke Co. built the town around 1890 to house the families who worked its coal mines.

The new mines filled the town fast. In 1890 Maybeury had 875 people, which made it the largest town in McDowell County. It ranked fifth among towns south of Charleston, the state capital, and 31st in all of West Virginia. The 2010 census counted 234 residents, and by 2020 that number had fallen to 109.

“McDowell County mines more coal than it ever has in its history, probably more coal than any county in the United States and yet there are more people getting surplus food packages in McDowell County than any county in the United States.”

  • Named for two coal menThe town's name joins the last names of two coal operators, James May and William Beury. Their company, Shamokin Coal & Coke Co., laid out the camp around 1890.
  • Kennedy stopped in 1960John F. Kennedy stopped at Maybeury's Esso station while he campaigned in the 1960 presidential primary. On September 27, 1960, in a speech in Canton, Ohio, he said McDowell County's miners were losing their jobs to machines even as the county dug more coal than ever.
  • The company storeIn 1992 the Pocahontas Fuel Company Store joined the National Register of Historic Places. The building no longer stands; it has since been torn down.
