About Maysville, Arkansas

Adam Beatie arrived in 1828 as the first white resident, and the area became Beatie's Prairie. John Martin May came in 1831, and the community was later named for him. The post office took the name Maysville in 1850. County histories call it the largest settlement in Benton County during the 1840s.

Shortly before the Civil War, several families started the Harmonial Vegetarian Society near Maysville. They built a three-story house with 80 to 90 rooms on 520 acres of farmland. Members lived communally, ate no meat and rejected marriage. The commune broke up after about four years amid wartime violence.
