About Mayville, New York
William Peacock surveyed the site for the Holland Land Company in 1804. A year later the village was named Mayville to honor Elisabeth Busti, whose maiden name was May. She was the wife of Paul Busti, Agent General of the land company. Mayville was later chosen as the county seat.
The Holland Land Company opened a sales office in the village in 1810. In 1836, angry residents rose up against the company. They broke into the office and wrecked its furniture and papers.
