About McArthur, Ohio

Before railroads reached McArthur, wagons carried its trade to Ohio River towns. A steam mill built east of town in 1856 produced surplus flour for shipment.

McArthur was laid out in 1815 and first called McArthurstown. The name honors Duncan McArthur, who served as a general during the War of 1812. The McArthur Hotel, built in 1839, is the oldest building still standing in the village. After a fire in July 2025, crews began restoring it in 2026.
