About McGuire AFB, New Jersey
McGuire AFB is a community of 4,522 people in Burlington County, built around the air base of the same name. The airfield opened in 1937 as Rudd Field and later took the name Fort Dix Army Air Base, after the Army post next door. It shut down for a short time after World War II, then came back in 1948 under the name McGuire Air Force Base.
The new name honored Maj. Thomas B. McGuire Jr., who was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on Aug. 1, 1920. He became the second leading ace in American history. He was killed in action in the Philippines on Jan. 7, 1945, and the Medal of Honor was awarded to him after his death.
- The Gateway to the EastGlobal mobility became the base's core job in 1945, moving people and cargo around the world, and the Air Force came to know McGuire as its "Gateway to the East." In 1992 the base joined the newly reorganized Air Mobility Command.
- Three bases become oneThe 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended joining McGuire with its neighbors, and Congress ordered it. On 1 October 2009 the base merged with the Army's Fort Dix and the Navy's Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst. The result, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, was one of 12 joint bases formed under that law and is the only tri-service base in the Department of Defense.
- A new host wing in 2009The 305th Air Mobility Wing ran the base from October 1994 to March 2009. Then the newly activated 87th Air Base Wing took over command of the installation. The 87th now supports 3,933 facilities across the joint base.
