About McMillan, Luce County, Michigan

McMillan Township is a civil township of 2,471 people in Luce County. Its 588.78 square miles of land make it the largest municipality by area in Michigan, and it fills 65.5% of the county. The village of Newberry, the county seat and the only incorporated place in Luce County, lies inside it.

The township reaches north to a long shoreline on Lake Superior, and the Tahquamenon, Two Hearted and Carp rivers all cross it. Lumber and railroads built its first settlements. Hunter's Mill, between Newberry and Soo Junction, was once a lumbering settlement.

  • Soo Junction, 1891 to 1941Soo Junction, east of Newberry, took its name from the spot where two lines of the South Shore and Atlantic Railroad met. It had a post office of its own from January 19, 1891, until May 30, 1941.
  • A logging spur turned trolleyIn 1911 the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad built a branch line that ran out of Soo Junction to the mill of the Hunter & Love Lumber Company, on the Tahquamenon River. The line was first built to standard gauge. Joseph Beech Sr., who founded the riverboat tours, later narrowed it so mining engines could pull his cars. Today the Toonerville Trolley Riverboat Tour runs 5.5 miles on 24-inch gauge track to Betty B Landing.
  • Upper Tahquamenon FallsThe western part of Tahquamenon Falls State Park, with the Upper Tahquamenon Falls, lies in the township, and so does Muskallonge Lake State Park. Crisp Point Light stands in the township's northeast corner, on the Lake Superior shore.
