About Mentor, Kansas
Mentor is a census-designated place of 101 people in Saline County, south of the county seat of Salina. It grew up as a small stop on the Union Pacific in Smolan Township, and a 1912 state cyclopedia described it as a hamlet. The railroad that once ran north and south through Mentor was later abandoned, but the community remains on Mentor Road, at an elevation of 1,273 feet.
- Named for Mentor, OhioThe settlers who founded the community had come from Mentor, Ohio, so they gave their new Kansas home the same name. A post office opened under that name in 1881.
- A post office until 1995By 1912 Mentor had an express office, and its post office issued money orders and served one rural route. The post office kept serving the community until it closed in 1995.
- Daily trains until 1929The Union Pacific ran passenger trains on its route between Salina and McPherson, and several stopped at Mentor each day until at least 1929. Mixed trains kept serving the town until at least 1959, and the line was later abandoned.
