About This Historic Map

Drawn from an elevated bird's-eye perspective, this map presents Merced in the 1880s, when the area was shaped by its railroad, agriculture, and frontier town growth. The view sweeps across an orderly grid of streets and blocks set against open valley land, with the mountains rising far in the background and inset scenes of notable buildings arranged along the borders.

Notable landmarks shown on the map include the Public School Building, the Court House, the First National Bank of Merced, and the residence buildings featured in the framing vignettes, along with many of the historic streets, blocks, and rail lines that shaped life around Merced in the era.

For anyone who grew up in Merced, put down roots in the San Joaquin Valley, or traces their family back to its early days, this map is more than a historic view. It captures the neat grid of streets, the proud civic buildings, and the wide valley beyond, and the memories that keep families connected to Merced.
