About Mercerville, New Jersey

Mercerville is a community of 13,447 people in Hamilton Township, Mercer County. It sits about 4 miles east of the center of Trenton, the state capital. The town grew up around Five Points, a crossroads where five roads meet. Most of its shops and businesses line those roads today.

The place was first called Sandtown. Later it took the name of General Hugh Mercer, an officer in the Revolution. Mercer was wounded at the Battle of Princeton, and he died of those wounds on January 12, 1777.

  • On Washington's routeGeorge Washington led the Continental Army through this ground during the Revolutionary War. Many historical markers around Mercerville trace the army's path. Several follow its march through the night after the Second Battle of Trenton. That march ended at the Battle of Princeton, where Mercer fell.
  • Once paired with Hamilton SquareFor years the census counted Mercerville and its eastern neighbor as one place, Mercerville-Hamilton Square. After the 2000 count, it split them in two for 2010. Hamilton Square was once called Nottingham, after the English town. During the War of 1812, anti-British feeling ran high, so people renamed it for Alexander Hamilton. Most Mercerville teens still go to Nottingham High School.
