About Merlin, Oregon

A railroad station opened here in 1883 under the name Jump Off Joe, after a local stream. In October 1886 the station was renamed Merlin. A railroad civil engineer picked the name for the merlins, a kind of falcon, that he saw nearby.

The 1940 WPA guide called Merlin a site of early gold mining. The labs of an old mining and milling company were still standing then. Ruins of prehistoric pit houses near the town were among the earliest traces of people found in Oregon.
