About Mexico, Maine

Mexico is a town of 2,756 people in Oxford County, set on hills above the Androscoggin River, across from Rumford. Its land began as part of Holmanstown Plantation, which the Massachusetts General Court granted to Colonel Jonathan Holman of Sutton, Massachusetts, and others in 1789. Dixfield split off and was incorporated in 1803. The part left over, where Isaac Gleason had been the first settler, was incorporated as Mexico on February 13, 1818.

Residents picked the name because they sided with Mexico in its war for independence from Spain, which ran from 1810 to 1821. Known in those years as Mexico Corner, the town grew up around farms and the mills on its streams. In the 19th century its business center took shape where the Swift River meets the Androscoggin, close to the water power.

  • Ridlonville in 1894The Rumford Falls Brick Company's president, George W. Ridlon, founded a new settlement in Mexico's eastern section in 1894 and gave it his own name, Ridlonville. He put up 30 cottages there and built the Hotel Ridlon to go with them.
  • A downtown where rivers meetMexico's downtown sits in the corner where the Swift River joins the Androscoggin at a right angle. Those low banks have flooded many times, including in 1936, 1953 and 1987.
  • Chummy Broomhall's trailsChummy Broomhall, born in Mexico, raced on the U.S. cross-country ski team at the Winter Olympics of 1948 and 1952. He went on to lay out the cross-country courses for the 1960 and 1980 Winter Olympics, and the National Ski Hall of Fame added him to its ranks in 1981.
