About Miccosukee, Florida
The town was settled by the Miccosukee people, a Creek group who became part of the Seminole nation. The British mapped it in 1778, with 60 homes and a town square. In 1818, during the First Seminole War, Andrew Jackson burned more than 300 homes there. By 1831, it had a post office, schools, churches and stores.
After the Civil War, the land around Miccosukee went back to farms. The Florida Central Railroad served the town by 1887. In the 1890s, wealthy industrialists bought large tracts for quail hunting estates. Miccosukee thrived until the boll weevil struck in 1918, and the railroad pulled out in the mid-1940s.
- A 1894 schoolhouse still serving childrenConcord School was built in Miccosukee in 1894 for grades 1 to 6. It closed in 1985. The building still houses the town's Head Start program.
