About Middle Amana, Iowa

Middle Amana is a village of 543 people in Iowa County, on the north side of the Iowa River valley, 1.5 miles west of Amana and 2 miles east of High Amana. Of the seven Amana Colonies villages it is the largest, and together the seven form a National Historic Landmark. In the 1860s a canal 9 miles long was built to carry water from the Iowa River, and the woolen mill on its wide raceway became the center of the village.

  • A busy village by 1881The woolen mill was not working alone for long. By 1881 Middle Amana also had a starch factory, a machine shop, a wagon shop and a blacksmith shop, along with a shop that printed and bound books, a brick yard, a general store, a school and a meeting house.
  • A brick school from 1865The Amana School was built in 1865. It stands on the town's southwest block, just north of Iowa 220. The oldest part is a two-story brick building, and a one-story wing was added later.
  • A high school, 1935 to 1991Voters approved a bond in a 1935 election, and Amana High School opened in Middle Amana. It served the colonies until it closed in 1991. The middle school of the Clear Creek-Amana district was also once here before it moved to Tiffin, and Amana Elementary School still holds classes in the village.
