About Middleberg, Oklahoma

Middleberg is an unincorporated community of 99 people in Grady County, Oklahoma, on the old route of US Highway 62 between Blanchard and Chickasha. It began as a stop on the Oklahoma Central Railroad, a line paid for by Dutch investors.

One of those backers, Van Oss, wanted to be sure his money went where he intended. He sent two Dutch engineers, Gerrit A. A. Middelberg and his son Martin, to oversee the building of the railroad. The trains no longer shape life here, and Middleberg is now a rural community.

  • Two stories behind the nameLocals give two explanations for the name. One holds that the stop sat in the middle of the route from Chickasha to Blanchard. The other says it honors Gerritt Middleberg, who represented the railroad's Dutch investors. The name is sometimes spelled Middleburg.
  • A school through eighth gradeMiddleberg Public School is an elementary district of its own. Children attend Middleberg Schools through the eighth grade, then go on to high school in nearby Blanchard. The Middleberg Baptist Church is another of the community's institutions.
