About Middleburgh, New York

Middleburgh is a town in Schoharie County, on the county's eastern line west of Albany, and it counted 3,112 people in the 2000 census. Settlers arrived around 1712 on the ground near the present village, which was first known as Weiser's Dorf after its founder, Johann Conrad Weiser, Sr. During the American Revolution, raids launched from British territory brought the settlers great hardship.

When the state created Schoharie County in 1797, it carved this town out of the town of Schoharie at the same moment, so Middleburgh was among the county's first towns. It was known as Middletown until 1801. In 1881 the village of Middleburgh incorporated and set itself apart from the town around it.

  • Dance of the Hop PickersIn 1941 the artist Mary Earley painted a mural called Dance of the Hop Pickers inside the Middleburgh post office. She worked in oil and tempera, and the commission came from the Treasury's Section of Painting and Sculpture.
  • Where three creeks meetThe Schoharie Creek runs through the middle of the town. Near the village, the Little Schoharie Creek and Stony Creek flow into it and swell its waters, and the valley they share lies west of Cannady Hill.
  • Huntersville and Polly HollowThe hamlet of Huntersland, in the southeast along the Little Schoharie Creek, was first called Huntersville. West Middleburgh, on the west bank of the Schoharie Creek near the town's southwestern edge, is known to locals as Polly Hollow.
