About Middlebury, Pennsylvania
Middlebury is a township in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Organized in September 1822 from territory belonging to Delmar and Elkland, it originally reached into areas now within Chatham and Farmington. The Census Bureau recorded 1,312 residents in 2020.
- Niles Valley FarmAugustus and Mary Lyon moved to Tioga County in 1831 and purchased a farm at Niles Valley.
- Many CallingsDaniel G. Stevens taught school, worked in lumbering and farming, held township offices, and served one term as a county commissioner.
- Civil War ServiceAbram Lyon served in two Pennsylvania units and participated in the battles of Drainsville, Weldon Railroad, and Petersburg.
- Farm and IndustryHorace Leroy Stevens remained on his family's Middlebury farm and pursued lumbering and tobacco cultivation after an unsuccessful period growing hops.
