About Millersburg, Ohio
Millersburg is a village of 3,151 people and the county seat of Holmes County, in the middle of Ohio's Amish Country. Adam Johnson and Charles Miller, both of Coshocton County, laid out its first plat in November 1815, with Bridge, High and Market streets beside the state road where it crossed the Killbuck. Thomas Haskins became the first settler on that plat in the spring of 1819 and kept a tavern at the corner of Bridge and High.
A second plan followed on April 8, 1824, when Charles Miller and Andrew Johnston filed a plat for a New Town southeast of the first one, with 194 lots around a block saved for public use and Clay and Jackson streets as its main crossing. When Millersburg was picked as seat of the new Holmes County, the town took off. By 1833 it had ten stores, four taverns, four physicians, three attorneys and 73 dwelling houses.
- First school and sermon, 1820In the spring of 1820 James Withrow put up a one-and-a-half-story building across the corner from the Haskins tavern. Late that year settlers built a log cabin in the northeast corner of town to serve as a school, and Joseph Edger of Berlin taught there through the winter. That same season the cabin also hosted the first sermon ever given in Millersburg, delivered by a Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Harper.
- The Gazette in 1828Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio credits Millersburg with Holmes County's first newspaper, the Millersburg Gazette, which came off the press on June 9, 1828. When Howe described the town in 1846, it had 673 people, two newspaper printing offices, four churches, 10 dry goods stores, 3 groceries, a foundry and a grist mill.
- Courthouse SquareBeing the county seat is what made Millersburg grow, and the Holmes County Courthouse and Jail still stand on Courthouse Square at the center of village life. The courthouse and jail joined the National Register together in 1974.
- From 104 to minus 35Millersburg's thermometers have swung a long way. The village's hottest day on record reached 104 °F on July 20, 1930, and its coldest fell to −35 °F on January 20, 1994.
