About Millerton, Pennsylvania
In 1877 A. C. Lumbard and Son founded the Millerton Advocate, a small newspaper. There seemed to be no local field for a paper, but it won strong advertising from Elmira, New York. Harry T. Graves bought the plant that October. He made the Advocate a voice for Civil War veterans and won a good circulation in the county.
Millerton was first known as Hammond Creek, then as Millertown. It has been called Millerton since 1878. Its first settler was Garret Miller. The village began to grow about 1840, when James Miller opened the first store.
- Where the founding family is buriedThe cemetery at Millerton holds the remains of pioneer Garret Miller and his wife. Their son, Capt. Samuel Miller, and other members of the family rest there too.
