About Millinocket, Maine
Millinocket is a town of 4,114 people in Penobscot County, where Millinocket Stream joins the West Branch of the Penobscot River. Its name comes from an Abenaki word for land of many islands, after the islands in that river. The Penobscot people lived here for more than 10,000 years, and in 1829 the family of Betsy and Thomas Fowler cleared farmland beside Shad Pond.
The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad reached the area in 1894 on its way to Houlton. Charles W. Mullen, a University of Maine engineering graduate, saw the falls as power for a big pulp and paper mill, and Garret Schenck, from International Paper's Rumford Falls mill, found the money to build it. Work on the Great Northern Paper Company mill started on May 15, 1899. Its machines turned out the first roll of newsprint on November 9, 1900, making it the largest paper mill in the world, and the town that grew up around it was incorporated on March 16, 1901.
- Thoreau's guides in 1846Other families joined the Fowlers in 1837. Henry David Thoreau came through in 1846 and paid some of the Fowlers to guide him up Mount Katahdin, a trip he later wrote about in The Maine Woods. Katahdin rises 5,270 feet, 20 miles northwest of town. No peak in Maine stands higher, and the Appalachian Trail ends at its summit.
- A mill built by Italian masonsSchenck brought in bonded workers, most of all stonemasons from Italy, who owed for their passage to America and so landed already in debt. Those masons did most of the work of building the mill. Polish, Finnish, Lithuanian and Hungarian newcomers and French Canadians also came to work on it.
- After the millIn early 2003 Great Northern Paper sought bankruptcy protection for its mills in Millinocket and East Millinocket, and both closed in 2008. A Canadian corporation bought the two mills soon after. With help from the state and local development groups, Millinocket has built up a service economy and draws visitors in all four seasons.
- A marathon since 2015The Millinocket Marathon and Half began in 2015, started by Gary Allen, who runs long distances and directs races. Runners now travel to it from all 50 states and from abroad.
