About Minnewaukan, North Dakota

Minnewaukan is a city of 199 people in Benson County, near the west shore of Devils Lake. In the early 1880s, people first settled here around a steamboat landing on the lake. That first spot sat about 80 rods from the water, and today it is called North Minnewaukan.

The town itself was founded in 1884, a few years after that first landing grew up, and it was incorporated as a city in 1898. Today Minnewaukan is the county seat of Benson County.

  • Named for Spirit WaterThe name comes from Mniwakaƞ, a Sioux word for "Spirit Water." Federal place-name records give the full name as Mini Waukon Chante, The Heart of Mysterious Water. They say white settlers got the meaning wrong, and that is how the lake came to be called Devil's Lake. The Spirit Lake Tribe next door uses the same word for its Dakota language, Mniwakaƞ Oyate.
  • Seat of Benson CountyFort Totten, Leeds and Maddock all have more people, but county business is done in Minnewaukan. The Benson County Courthouse stands here, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
