About Minot, North Dakota
Minot is a city of 48,377 people and the seat of Ward County, in the deep valley of the Souris, or Mouse, River. The Great Northern Railway chose the townsite in November 1886. Part of it was railroad scrip land, and part was the homestead Erik Ramstad had claimed in 1883. Ramstad agreed to give up his claim, and he went on to become one of the city's leaders.
Tents went up almost overnight once the track came through. Within five months more than 5,000 people lived there, so the town earned the nickname Magic City. Minot was incorporated on July 16, 1887. The Soo Line first planned to cross the river at Burlington, but local landowners gave it free right-of-way, and its line reached Minot in 1893.
- Named for Henry MinotHenry Davis Minot, who lived from 1859 to 1890, was an ornithologist and an investor in the Great Northern. He spoke for eastern backers and was a friend of James J. Hill while the railroad was being built.
- The bridge that fell in 1898A tornado in 1898 knocked down the wooden Gassman Coulee Bridge near Minot. A passenger train was only three minutes away and stopped just in time. Until a steel trestle was finished in 1899, wagons and buggies carried riders across the coulee to a second train waiting on the far side.
- Little ChicagoMinot was a wide-open town from 1905 to 1920, and it was called the crime capitol of North Dakota. Attorney general William Langer worked to clean it up from 1917 to 1920. During Prohibition, though, it became a supply hub for Al Capone's liquor trade. Smugglers hid cargo from Canada in tunnels under downtown, and the city picked up the nickname Little Chicago.
- The flood of 2011After a flood in April 1969, the Army Corps of Engineers straightened the river through town and built flood controls. In June 2011 large dam releases upstream pushed the river even higher, and about 12,000 residents had to leave their homes. The water peaked on June 26 at 1,561.7 feet, three feet over the 1881 record. More than 4,100 homes were affected, and 805 were damaged beyond repair.
