About Misericordia University, Pennsylvania

Misericordia University is a community of 1,064 people in Dallas Township, Luzerne County, built around the Catholic university that shares its name. The Sisters of Mercy, an order founded in Dublin in 1831, came to the Wyoming Valley in 1875 to pray, teach and care for the sick. In the coal mining region they taught children by day and grown men and women in evening classes, and in 1914 they bought nearly 100 acres in Dallas for a college.

On August 14, 1924, a crowd of 2,500 watched the dedication of College Misericordia, the first four-year college in Luzerne County. Its name is the Latin word for mercy. The college has taught men as well as women since the 1970s, has grown to 120 acres on its original grounds eight miles from downtown Wilkes-Barre, and became Misericordia University on August 24, 2007.

“On Mercy Day, September 24, 1924, thirty-seven students began their collegiate studies sharing the Sister's motto Mulier Fortis or Valiant Woman.”
