About Mitchell, South Dakota

Mitchell is a city of 15,660 people on the James River, and it serves as the seat of Davison County. Settlers first arrived in 1879, and the town was incorporated in 1883. It took its name from Alexander Mitchell, a Milwaukee banker who led the railroad then called the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul, or the Milwaukee Road. Dakota Wesleyan University has its campus in the southwest part of the city.

The city's best-known building is the Corn Palace. Its outside walls carry murals made from dried corn and grains in several colors. Those outside designs get a new theme every fall at harvest, while the murals inside change about once a decade. The hall also hosts basketball games, trade shows, the high school prom and the Shriner's Circus.

“Mitchell, lacking in natural recreational areas, was one of the first plains cities to create a large artificial lake to supply its demands.”
South Dakota: A Guide to the State, 1938
  • Louis Beckwith's 1886 homeLouis Beckwith helped found the Corn Palace. His furnished Victorian-Italianate home from 1886 now stands behind the Dakota Discovery Museum, next to a one-room schoolhouse from 1885. The Louis Beckwith House joined the National Register in 1982.
  • A village under a domeNear Lake Mitchell, scientists are digging up a Native American village. They believe it belonged to ancestors of the Mandan, who now live in North Dakota. A climate-controlled building called the Archeodome covers the site, so the digging goes on all year.
  • George McGovern's hometownGeorge McGovern grew up in Mitchell and lived here until he died in 2012. He represented South Dakota in the House and the Senate and was the Democratic nominee for President in 1972.
